The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet is looking for a Head of Technical

Norwegian National Opera & Ballet (NNO&B) is changing the management structure of its technical departments and is seeking to recruit to the new position of Head of Technical. The Head of Technical will have overall responsibility for technical activity related to running performances and rehearsals. The Head of Technical will lead a department comprising approximately 125 members of staff, with different specialisms (stage technology, lighting, sound, video, props, dressers, operations, maintenance, etc).

As Head of Technical with NNO&B, you will join the organisation’s senior management team and report to the CEO. You will lead your own dedicated management team within a variety of specialist areas and with them and your fellow senior managers you will continue to implement our ongoing restructure. Together with the other managers and your colleagues, you will help us to realise our high-quality opera and ballet performances. As Head of Technical you will be responsible for planning and managing resources in accordance with our artistic objectives and within available parameters. NNO&B’s artistic programme is usually scheduled in the opera house’s own performance spaces, our mainstage being the largest stage in Norway, with advanced technical facilities which enable the high technical precision and quality of our performances. In addition, our activity includes tours and guest performances in Norway and internationally.

If you are the person we are looking for, you will be confident in a management role, while you enjoy delegating responsibility to others. You will have a keen interest in the arts and culture and NNO&B’s commitment to public service. You will be good at building teams incorporating different specialisms and thrive on complex problem solving and overcoming challenges. You will be used to working hard and will have significant knowledge of and expertise in health and safety within technical operations. You will bring skills which will also contribute to meeting NNO&B’s sustainability targets and reducing its carbon footprint.

We think you will be successful in this role if you have the following expertise and experience:

• Relevant higher education and/or significant experience of technical management within theatre or related industries.
• Experience of leadership gained in a highly-skilled technical environment
• Experience of project and process management
• Experience of or knowledge about theatre is an advantage, but not essential
• Familiarity with employer/employee consultation and experience of collaborating with union representatives and unions

Person specification - desirable:

• Good leadership and collaborative skills
• The ability to motivate and generate enthusiasm
• A structured approach, and a good understanding of finance and resource management
• Good written and verbal communication skills in Norwegian and English
• The ability to understand artistic processes and see the bigger picture
